Strengthening Access and Quality Education in Lakhimpur (SAQEL)

Literacy rates along with age appropriate learning levels remains a major issue for one of the most flood prone districts i.e. Lakhimpur of Assam. These challenges coupled with issues such as poverty, lack of employment opportunities leads in increasing the drop out ratio to 6.24% in the district.

The SAQEL project aims to improve educational outcomes of 10,000 school going children belonging majorly to Tribal and Adivasi community in the Nowboicha and Bihpuria educational block of the Lakhimpur district.

  • 10,000 children (Ages 6-14) of Lower Primary (Grades I-V) and Upper Primary Schools (Grades VI-VIII).
  • 300 government school teachers.
  • 80 School Management Committees and Mothers Groups.
  • High dropout rates (6.24% vs 4.67% national average).
  • Flood-prone region disrupting education.
  • Poverty limits educational opportunities.
  • Linguistic instruction barriers.
  • Low foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Minimal community involvement in education.
  • 7000 children in 80 government primary schools improve their literacy and numeracy skills.
  • 3,000 children in grades 6 to 8 from 20 government-run middle schools improve their STEM skills.
  • 3,000 children from 20 government-run middle schools improve necessary Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills.
  • Local key stakeholders improve their capacity to enhance the learning environment and gain sustainable influence on government agencies.
  • 91% of schools are meeting at least 7 parameters of Right to Education Act.
  • In Gunotsav 2024, 67% of the project school achieved A , from 50%in 2023.
  • 22% of students in grades 3 to 5 can read a short story fluently in Assamese and 35.83% students can make sentence on English independently.
  • 83% of children in grades 3 to 5 can independently write a short, meaningful letter.
  • 38% of students in grades 3 to 5 can independently perform simple division operation.
  • The Socio Emotional Learning activities helping to increase monthly average attendance in 20 project schools from 81.20% at 2023 to 84.83% in 2024.
  • With STEM support and counselling 72.14% of students are able to solve questions related to real world applications.
  • 37% SMCs were functioning independently and actively participating and developing yearly school development plan.
  • Out of 111 students applied for pre and post matric scholarship under Tea Tribe Welfare Department till July 2024, 15 students received one time amount of ranging Rs. 7000 – Rs. 25000 till date
